Job Description

Etsy is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead our Seller Analytics team.

Our marketplace has an abundance of one-of-a-kind items from independent artists, designers and vintage collectors from around the world. Our challenge? Providing sellers on our platform with useful data and actionable insights to continue to grow their businesses on our platform.

Are you interested in empowering the growth of millions of small businesses? Excited about working at scale - and helping solve all the architectural and infrastructural problems that come with this - while keeping the growth of Etsy sellers top of mind?

Our team is responsible for collecting and processing data about shop and listing performance on our platform. We then display this information in a way that helps sellers make sense of their shops' performance, including surfacing data-driven recommendations about how they can continue to grow.

We're a cross-functional group of software engineers, product managers, designers, and researchers. Here's a taste of the problems we're solving:

You can learn more about our philosophies, tools, and some of the challenges we've been solving on our Engineering blog: http://codeascraft.com/

We are language-agnostic in our approach to interviewing.

This role is located in our Brooklyn office.

About the Team

* We're a cross-functional group of software engineers, product managers, designers, and researchers. Here's a taste of the problems we're solving:
* How should we architect an analytics pipeline to handle the massive amount of data (one example: hourly search impression data for the tens of millions of listings on our platform) we report to Etsy sellers?
* How might we iterate on our big data jobs to deliver rapid results throughout the day?
* How should we then represent real-time, preliminary, data to our sellers, who depend on this data to make decisions about their businesses?
* What's the best way to structure and interpret our data, such that we can draw rich insights for Etsy sellers to leverage in their decision-making process?
* How can we partner with infrastructure teams across Etsy Engineering to deliver a best-in-class data platform within the context of a product team focused on delivering value to Etsy customers?
* Our production systems rely on Scala, Hadoop, PHP, and Google Cloud Platform; most importantly, we are proud to have an engineering culture that encourages career growth and learning

About the Role

* As an Engineering Manager, you can expect to...
* Lead teams to build great products. Engineering managers at Etsy play a small part in the hands-on process of building software, but a very large part in orchestrating engineers to achieve great results.
* Participate in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring and on-boarding exceptional engineering talent.
* Collaborate with other engineering teams across Etsy to advocate for and drive change on behalf of your team.
* Partner cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and others data scientists to ensure that your team is delivering value for our users.
* Facilitate continuous learning and improvement for your team.

About You

* Are enthusiastic and curious about learning about engineering systems. You know how to ask questions to better understand new domains and are comfortable discussing tradeoffs made in system design.
* Can facilitate great technical decision-making across a broad technical stack.
* Have experience mentoring, growing, and creating opportunities for engineers on your team.
* Are an analytical thinker and understand how to wield data to make informed decisions about your work.
* Know how to apply process judiciously to amplify your team's work and deliver great products more effectively.
* Thrive in a deeply collaborative environment where you partner with other cross-disciplinary leaders to achieve great results.
