Job Description

At Lyft, community is what we are and it's what we do. It's what makes us different. To create the best ride for all, we start in our own community by creating an open, inclusive, and diverse organization where all team members are recognized for what they bring.

At Lyft we are transforming the way people and cars move through our communities. Passengers rely on Lyft to get to work, to go to the doctor, or to get home safely when public transit has stopped running. Drivers use Lyft for income and flexibility. Building a stable and reliable application for our passengers and drivers is a responsibility we take seriously, and we are building out a team of Software Engineers focused on reliability, in order to deliver a consistent and highly reliable user experience.

As the leader of Reliability Software Engineering at Lyft, you'll play a key part in the development of a new career path, growing a small team into a larger organization. All of our engineering teams are responsible for deploying, supporting, and monitoring their own services and are accountable for their quality, reliability, and health. Our vision for the RSWE team you will be leading is a group of software engineers that focus on standardizing and supporting all of the rapidly growing teams throughout our organization, assessing their architecture, helping them design scalable services, and fostering great operational practices.

This role will report into the Director of Infrastructure Engineering and manage RSWEs embedded across engineering teams.

You will work closely with Infrastructure teams to help them develop the most useful and impactful internal tools. And you'll help execute on our vision that ensures Lyft engineers can continue to ship features quickly and safely.

RSWE Team Responsibilities:

* Lead overall team execution and mindset on 'production first' and trusted user experience mentality
* Propose and execute on substantial reliability projects (e.g., disaster recovery, performance, graceful degradation, synthetic data playback, etc.)
* Work with multiple related teams to develop a deep understanding of their service architecture and operational responsibilities
* Assist and educate teams on best practices for building scalable, reliable, and supportable services
* Conduct root cause analysis on production issues with other engineers, and determine how we can prevent them in the future
* Help build tools and customizations that make developing and supporting your teams' services painless
* Contribute ideas on how we can continuously improve our systems and processes

Your Responsibilities:

* Eager to define the RSWE role, including career path and responsibilities. We launched a successful pilot program earlier this year and need you to help develop it further
* Experience building high performing teams and growing engineers
* Excited about being a hands on manager and growing a small team into a larger organization
* Build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other
* Provide career guidance, continuous feedback, address underperformance, and recognize the individual strengths and contributions of your team members
* Partner with engineering leadership to identify needs across the organization and build and execute the roadmap for reliability at Lyft
* Create plans for prioritizing technical and resourcing challenges in your organization
* Work closely with the Lyft recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds

Experience & Skills:

* You have experience leading managers and engineers at all levels, and you're skilled at guiding them through their career development
* You are steadfastly focused on your customers
* You have a strong focus on metrics and know how to measure the health of engineering teams
* You believe in building both teams and products that scale
* You can motivate and instill a strong sense of ownership in your team
* You have experience guiding teams through planning, prioritization, and execution of work
* You have a solid understanding of systems and application design, including operational and reliability trade-offs
* You're a great communicator, and can advocate for your proposals while also empathizing with your team's goals and priorities
* You graciously help others who look to you for feedback and guidance
* You think ahead and build for the future
