Position Overview

The Director, Engineering will lead the teams that build & maintain our insights and analytics tools, as well as the analysts and data scientists that produce insights. The Director, Engineering will work with our Philadelphia, Denver, Virginia, and Sunnyvale-based Product, Engineering, and Data Science teams, as well as our Philadelphia leadership, to ensure that we are providing tools that answer meaningful questions and provide insights to drive product strategy and investment.

This position is located in Denver, CO.

What will you work on?

Our systems currently process billions of events per day and data volume is growing rapidly. You will play a crucial role in leading the team that designs and implements state of the art technologies that are scalable and reliable. You will consider the overall Comcast data strategy and align the video organization strategy to enable a culture of data-driven decisions and insights. Your team works with cutting edge tools to improve data quality, access to data, drive insights and support decisions made from large data sets. You will provide clear guidance on which high leverage data sources to focus. You will help the organization understanding what types of questions ask of the data. Your team will continue to evolve data products, apply new industry standards, and implement machine learning in a fast-changing ecosystem of open source big data technologies on both streaming and at-rest data pipelines. This will be a challenging and interesting experience for several reasons.

* First, in typical Comcast fashion, the company continues to reinvest in core systems. Comcast is executing an unprecedented cable system migration to an all IP delivery and playout environment that is integral to virtually all aspects of the larger video ecosystem. There is no shortage of insights and analytics needed to drive this transition.
* Second, the scale of active engineering at Comcast is driving innovation. Solution discoveries continue to be made across the video system at large. Improvements are driving efficiencies to the system, efficiencies to the bottom line, and new & better user experiences for our customers. We need good tools to help us extract maximum learning from our work. At the same time, we need high performing teams that continue to deliver intelligent solutions back to the broader organization.
* Third, attracting, hiring, engaging and retaining a high performing team of the best engineers, scientists, and analysts in a competitive labor market is critical to the sustained success of the team.

Where can you make an impact?

The VIPER organization with the Technology, Product, and eXperience (TPX) organization is building the core components needed to deliver the next generation of television. Running this infrastructure, identifying trouble spots, and optimizing the overall user experience is a challenge that can only be met with a robust big data architecture capable of providing insights that would otherwise be drowned in a sea of data.

Success in this role is best enabled by applying a broad mix of skills and interests ranging from technical team leadership and intentional culture creation, to strategic planning and software delivery expertise all within the multidisciplinary field of data analysis/data engineering.

Core Responsibilities

* Manage and develop a team of managers, engineers, data scientists, and analysts to their highest potential
* Collaborate with business partners and customers to understand their needs and challenges
* Guide teams to analyze massive amounts of data and drive prototype ideas for new tools and data products
* Rely on software engineering best practices to deliver production quality software components under an agile software development approach
* Rely onand nurture evolution ofdata science best-practices to answer key questions for the business
* Leverage technology advances in the fast-growing big data ecosystem to develop insightful, leading data products
* Cultivate an open, welcoming environment of accountability and collaboration where the impact of the team is clear to both the broader business as well as the individual team member

Basic Qualifications

* Bachelor degree in computer science, or equivalent work experience
* Experience managing both local and remote teams (individual contributors and managers)
* Ability to mentor and grow individuals through coaching and influence
* Experience creating strong team relationships and desirable collaboration


* Experience in software development of large-scale distributed systems including proven track record of delivering backend systems that participate in a complex ecosystem
* Enjoy working with data data analysis, data quality, reporting, and visualization
* Good communicator, able to analyze and clearly articulate complex issues and technologies understandably and engagingly
* Great design and problem-solving skills, with a strong bias for architecting at scale
* Adaptable, proactive and willing to take ownership
* Keen attention to detail and high level of commitment
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced agile environment
* Ability to make decisions quickly and independently; good shipped, is better than perfect on paper
* Good communication and interpersonal skills; capable of interacting with employees, peers, and managers on complex topics
* Ability to travel as needed; typically, 10%

Preferred Qualifications

* 10 years software development or delivery
* 5 years of leading Agile delivery teams
* 5 years applying data to software product decisions
* 5 years of technical solution analysis in support of business objectives
* Comfort using OKR's to focus team's priorities on delivered outcomes
* Good understanding in any: advanced mathematics, statistics, and probability

Education: BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

The VIPER team is an organization within Comcast Technology Solutions which supports the Product Management, Research & Development, Engineering and Operations for Comcast's World Class Video Experiences in use by Comcast and Syndicated Partners. We support both legacy QAM Video Delivery and the Next Generation IP Video Platform infrastructure from Content Acquisition to the Player Consuming experiences we control the end-to-end Video delivery platforms. These platforms deliver video for live linear, video on-demand and cloud DVR services consumed by more than 20 million customers both in-home and out of home on stb's, connected tv, mobile and desktop products.
