CircleUp harnesses the power of machine learning and predictive analytics to discover some of the fastest-growing companies in the consumer & retail sector. Our mission is to help entrepreneurs thrive by giving them the resources and capital they need. We are building a predictive data system called "Helio" to bring the data-driven revolution that has occurred in the public markets to the private markets, starting with consumer & retail.

We are working on challenging problems in information retrieval, entity resolution, and machine learning. We are developing an in-depth knowledge graph of all private companies by mining vast amounts of data to successfully rewrite the rules on how private companies are evaluated.

We are seeking a data scientist who will work as a member of our Insights team delivering insights to entrepreneurs. Partnering closely with our business team members, you will work directly with Helio data and artifacts, developing new insights and visualizations to help entrepreneurs understand and tell the story of their company's performance and best position themselves for long term success.

Responsibilities:

Answer key business questions from customers using Helio data and model outputs

Analyze structured & unstructured data to develop insights on an ad-hoc basis

Develop customer-friendly visualizations to communicate key insights

Using feedback from Insights team and customers, iterate on work to improve output and build prototype products for eventual scaled deployment

Interface deeply with Helio product team, becoming an expert in what we have done and what would be possible to support the Insights product

Come up with creative ways to find and use data that significantly impacts our key business metrics

Requirements:

Degree (B.S/ M.S./Phd) preferably in statistics, computer science, engineering, physical sciences, economics or related technical field

2+ years professional experience as a data scientist, ideally at an early/mid-stage startup

Prior experience providing actionable insights to business teams

Experience with ML techniques, especially unsupervised techniques likes clustering and topic modeling

Ability to write code in at least one scripting language, preferably Python

Excellent communication skills - Must be able to articulate analyses and methodologies clearly and communicate insights in an easily accessible way to the team & entrepreneurs (the latter in conjunction with Insights business development team)

Must be excited about working in a fast and changing environment where solutions have not been already defined
