We have an opening for a Computational Physicist to perform research and development of advanced methods for multi-scale, multi-physics simulation codes in support of the Laboratory's national security mission. You will work independently as a technical expert on a code development team, focusing on models and algorithms for use in high-performance computing on the latest large-scale parallel computing platforms in advancing the state of the art in large-scale multi-physics simulation; the scope of work involves many parallel tasks requiring prioritization. This position is in the Computation Directorate within the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

Essential Duties

* Propose, implement and analyze numerical algorithms to support multi-scale, multi-physics simulation capabilities based on requirements from a diverse user community.
* Participate in the development of simulation tools as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Provide informal training, and guidance/support to code users in the application of simulation tools developed.
* Establish and conduct independent research projects and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
* Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in both open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational physics or engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
* Advanced knowledge in one or more computational science disciplines, such as shock hydrodynamics, fluid mechanics, material behavior, particle transport, radiation transport, plasma physics or chemical processes.
* Significant experience developing and performing analysis of numerical algorithms and conducting independent research.
* Significant experience applying numerical methods within a scientific application.
* Significant experience addressing challenging problems with self-motivation and initiative.
* Significant experience programming in C/C++ in a Linux environment, using high-performance numerical software packages, and developing algorithms for massively-parallel computer architectures.
* Significant experience working independently and developing complex software as part of multidisciplinary team.
* Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, deliver scientific presentations, and provide advice to management.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
