Job Description

This is a Full Time position in San Francisco from September 6-December 20, 2019

Meraki's Intern and Co-op program is an intimate yet powerful group helping to build the newest parts of the Meraki stack. Comprised of Software, Hardware, and Product Management programs, our interns and co-ops have the opportunity to design, develop, manage, and ship features and products that impact customers around the world.

Meraki's intern program is designed to give interns the ability to explore the different avenues of the engineering teams while also enjoying the culture and atmosphere of the office. From lunch and learns and weekly meetups to afternoon socials and networking events, each day provides a new opportunity to learn and meet other Meraki employees.

As an intern on the backend team, you will work on solving impactful scalability and reliability challenges that face Cisco Meraki's Dashboard, the core web application and cloud infrastructure which power the millions of Meraki devices worldwide. Our devices are some of the most popular in the world; in the last three years alone, the number of active Meraki devices has increased by nearly four-fold. These devices result in our globally-distributed backend handling tens of billions of requests daily, 24/7/365.

You will work on projects that help us make our backend both more resilient and scalable as it handles an increasing number of requests and amount of data from our devices. You will have the opportunity to work on projects that span numerous domains: networking, databases, web app development, systems, data processing, and approximation algorithms. You will be able to make impact across any and all parts of the stack-from the Dashboard UI and backend down to the device firmware itself. Finally, you will make a direct, immediate, and significant difference to our customers and the hundreds of millions of users that rely on Meraki access points, switches, security appliances, phones, and cameras every single day.

What we look for in all intern/co-op candidates:

* BA/BS in Computer Science, ECE, EE, ME or STEM related field (in progress)
* Clear and effective communication skills
* Proactive learners who can quickly pick up working in multiple frameworks, languages and environments
* Passionate team players
* Continually able to learn from experience and eager for feedback
* Previous internship or large scale project experience
* A strong foundation in the fundamentals of Computer Science (familiarity with Javascript, CSS, Ruby on Rails, C/C++ or an understanding of databases)

Projects and Work Life:

Meraki interns and co-ops join the team for 12 and 16 week programs, respectively, and are placed directly onto subteams. During the program, interns/co-ops have the opportunity to work on a small starter project, such as integration and implementation of new tools, before spending the majority of the program on a larger project, such as building the infrastructure for a wireless device. Projects are cross functional, which allow insight into new languages and technologies, help encourage professional growth within engineering, and allow a sense of ownership within the team.

Meraki's engineering teams place a high emphasis on mentorship. Each intern and co-op is matched 1:1 with a mentor who provides continual feedback and guidance throughout the duration of the program. Mentors help with introductions to other team members, overviews of tools and processes, and provide a seamless integration into Meraki life.

Examples of Past Intern/Co-op Projects

* Designing a new PostgreSQL interface for our custom in-house time-series database
* Augmenting our data aggregation pipeline, responsible for handling hundreds of millions of rows of usage data every day, with new methods of aggregation
* Scaling backend services responsible for streaming data from our devices
* Improving device metadata reported by the core infrastructure connecting all our devices to our backend

Intern Benefits:

* Furnished housing in San Francisco for duration of program
* Competitive salary
* Weekly social events inside and outside of the office (Giants games, Exploratorium tickets, friendly soccer games)
* Lunch and dinner daily
* Customized laptop and desk setups
* Medical, dental, and vision coverage plans
