Job Description

The Surveillance Systems Group pioneers integrated sensing and decision support systems for both Air Traffic Control and Homeland Air Defense. Since the 1970s, this group pioneered significant advancements to the surveillance technology used by the major modern air traffic control radars and airborne collision avoidance systems. Ongoing programs focus on advancing new sensor, data fusion, and net-centric technologies to take new ideas from concept definition through the development and evaluation with an operational prototype. Examples of current system under development include the Ground Based Sense and Avoid (GBSAA) system currently in use by the US Army which uses ground-based surveillance to allow Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to detect and avoid other air traffic and ACAS X which uses airborne surveillance to replace the existing collision avoidance system on manned aircraft and also provide a detect and avoid solution for larger UAS. To accomplish these goals, this group employs a broad base of analysis, modeling, algorithm development, signal processing, software architecture and development, RF and digital hardware design, and system integration skills.

Job Description

The Surveillance Systems Group conducts research on integrated sensing and decision support architectures to support safe and efficient air and surface transportation. We are the world expert in airborne collision avoidance systems for manned aircraft and are currently leading efforts to develoop systems to support integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Urban Mobility platforms into the US National Airspace System. Integrating UAS into the airspace is a national priority and a key rsearch area for the group. We recently received R&D 100 awards in both 2016 and 2017 for developments in detect and avoid systems. Advances in autonomy and decision support will bring forth unprecedented changes to safety and effieiency for both air and surface transportation. To support these efforts we apply a broad base of analysis, modeling, optimization and machine learning to develop sensing architectures and decision support tools to ensure safe and efficient operation of autonomous systems.

We are looking for applicants with an interest and background in applied engineering, modeling and simulation and algorithm development to support the development of UAS Detect and Avoid systems that may incorporate radar and optical sensors and cooperative surveillance such as beacon surveillance and Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B). Example problem areas include analysis and algorithm development for surveillance and tracking algorithms, collision avoidance logic, and evaluating system performance for aircraft separation and unmanned aircraft system (UAS) collision avoidance applications. Activities will include computer programming, simulation, analysis, software build and release. Additional responsibilities include participation in product deployment and software configuration management. A successful candidate should have general knowledge in the fields of software development, integration, and validation. The successful candidate will collaborate with algorithm developers, work closely with industry and work as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Required qualifications:

* Master's degree in engineering, physics, Mathematics, or computer science OR a Bachelor's degree in these fields with three years of directly related experience.
* Experience programming with C++
* Experience with full-stack software development
* Ability to work in a team environment
* Clear communication skills to a wide spectrum of audiences

Desired qualifications

* Experience developing algorithms and mathematical models in a simulation environment.
* Experience with MATLAB
* Knowledge in the fields of probability theory and algorithm development
* Experience in other programming languages such as C++ or java
