Timehop began as 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo, a product created at Foursquare’s first ever Hackathon in February 2011. The original idea was to build the "mariokart ghost for the real world," a service that would replay your past foursquare checkins over your present in real time. In an effort to ship sooner, the product was simplified into a daily email.
Although the founders were working on another product as part of Techstars NYC, 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo was so well received it became impossible to ignore. A few months later it became their core focus, and they launched PastPosts.com (the Facebook version) followed by And7YearsAgram (the Instagram version) before finally merging all of these under a single brand: Timehop.
Timehop created the digital nostalgia category and continues to be THE team reinventing reminiscing for the digital era. We have more "old" photos and content than ever before, yet most of the internet focuses on "new".
Call us sentimental, but we just to happen to think digital memories and past connections matter.
We believe there is a massive untapped opportunity to build new ways of consuming, storytelling with, and finding meaning in our digital histories
