In 2007, our founder, Erin McKean, gave a talk at the TED conference in Monterey. Her question: what could you do if you truly mapped every word in the English language? The Silicon Valley investor Roger McNamee was in the audience, and he said "Let's find out!"

A year later, the company (initially called Alphabeticall, Inc., after the oldest dictionary in English) was born. Six months after that, Wordnik.com was already bigger -- in number of entries -- than the Oxford English Dictionary.

But being the world's biggest dictionary wasn't the end goal. When you have the best understanding of words as data points -- what they mean and how they relate to other words -- you basically have created a word graph. And with that graph, you can make what is essentially "GPS for English".

Today Wordnik, Inc. is Reverb Technologies -- we use our understanding of meaning to power not only Wordnik.com, but also the Reverb discovery reader app for iPhone and iPad. (The Reverb app was chosen as a Best New App and a Best News App by the App Store!) Our Wordnik APIs have served well over a billion calls, and our Reverb for Publishers blog recommendation plugin for WordPress powers thousands of sites' What To Read Next sections. And we are the creators and main contributors to the OS Swagger API description framework.
