Night Zookeeper is looking for a talented, creative, full stack Javascript developer to join our small but passionate team. We are on a mission to help kids develop their creativity. We build fun, immersive educational games to be used in school or at home.

    About us

Night Zookeeper is a children's story and series of educational games/products that we've created with the aim of inspiring children to develop their creativity, encouraging them to become creators rather than consumers of digital content. Our core product is an online educational game used in thousands of schools around the world with a focus on creative writing.

Our core team have been working together for the last 5 years to develop the company, we have been nominated for a Children's Bafta and received many awards over the years. We are looking to double our team in the coming months with a strong focus on hiring technical talent (4-5 developers).

    Our Technology

There is no shortage of interesting projects to work on, with lots of scope for experimentation with the latest technologies.

We use javascript nearly everywhere, but aren't against using other languages when they are better suited for a particular job. Server side, we are currently building a GraphQL API and are doing some work on analysing the students writing to detect spelling and grammar mistakes. This feedback gives teachers a great insight into how the children are performing. Our main database is MongoDB, but we also use Redis and Postgresql.

Client side, we use React/Redux, as well as Canvas, SVG and various game/animation libraries to make the experience super fun for kids.

    About the role

You will mainly be involved in developing our core products, creating new features and games. You will have your say in future feature developments, help our CTO to nurture the more Junior developers and be a key part in shaping the future of our company.

You must have worked as a full time developer for at least a couple of years. You will know javascript inside out and be confidant both on the client and on the server.

We are looking for someone who loves to create fun experiences. Can you do crazy things with SVG/CSS/Canvas? Have you built your own HTML5 game? We'd love to hear from you. We would also love to hire someone with a strong interest in NLP and machine learning, but this is not a requirement for the job.

    Location

We would like you to work with us, in our London office (we are moving to somewhere more central very soon). If you have a long commute, we are open to you working from home for part of the week but will need you to be in the office at least 3 days each week.
