Heart attacks, passion for science, and a dysfunctional healthcare system resulted in us launching Lean Labs. Here is our story:

In the 1900s, the #1 killer of humans were bacterial and viral infections. Our healthcare system structured itself to deal with these issues. You met with a doctor for 10 - 15 mins so they could determine what bug was trying to kill you and so they could prescribe a pill that kill that bug. It was incredibly successful, increasing expected lifespans dramatically.

Today, the #1 killer of people isn't bacteria or viruses, rather it is a set of chronic diseases (e.g. - diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, etc.) brought on by lifestyle decisions. Yet, our healthcare system hasn't responded since it isn't structured to do lifestyle interventions... because they can't be done in a 10 or 15 minute doctor meeting.

I discovered this disconnect between lifestyle driven diseases when I was researching heart disease. My father and grandfather both suffered heart attacks in their 40s and I wanted to avoid that fate. While this structural disconnect was disconcerting, even more troubling was the fact that most of today's common health beliefs are not based on science.

So Rich and I decided to launch Lean Labs to address these issues. We are building a digital therapeutics company focused on building digital services to address the chronic diseases killing Billions of people on the plant. We have assembled an amazing team with expertise in: Medicine, Software, Behavior Design, Psychology, Behavioral Economics, Coaching, and Mobile Technology.

Rich & I have a strong entrepreneurial track record which between us include an acquisition by Amazon, an acquisition by RIM, and and acquisition by HTC and and IPO.

We are trying to solve an incredibly hard problem, but it is an important one. If we solve it, we will change the lives of billions of people, and it will be a gigantic business.
