Our Story

In 2010, Paul and his coworkers sold their startup to Google. Before long he teamed up with Ben and started a new company, focused on a problem they'd been thinking about for years: People.

The people in our lives - our friends, spouses, and coworkers - are everything to us. But the way that we meet people is incredibly inefficient. Each day we walk past thousands of strangers, hoping that by random chance we happen to connect with the right ones. If you could somehow optimize this process, you could create millions of successful friendships and marriages. You could connect cofounders who start world-changing companies. You would make life more fun and meaningful for everyone. This was what they wanted to build.

The product they settled on was a mobile app (and backend service) with a simple concept: If someone was standing near you, their profile would show up on your phone. If someone interesting walked past you, the app would notify you. They launched in beta and amazing stories started coming in. People were getting alerts about old friends nearby thousands of miles from home, finding cofounders and new jobs, getting notified when visitors had arrived, and using it to remember people's names. The technology was still primitive and there was a lot to figure out, but the use cases kept growing. It was clear that there was something here. The company raised funding from top-tier investors, launched publicly, and began building the team.

About Us

At Highlight, we like working on really hard problems and we deeply value both engineering and design. Academically, we come from places like Stanford, Brown, and Caltech. Before Highlight, we helped build products at Google, Facebook, and Apple.

Working at Highlight

As an early employee at Highlight, you will be a critical part of our core team and have a huge influence over the direction of the company. Your days will be filled with all sorts of fascinating challenges, from mastering new wearable platforms, to finding signal in huge data sets, to using phone sensors and location technologies to do things that have never before been possible.

The Interview Process

Our goal is to hire exceptional individuals who view themselves as generalists. We believe that smart people can learn new languages and platforms, and they usually enjoy doing so. As such, our hiring process is primarily concerned with raw talent rather than years of professional experience.

Our interview process consists of an initial phone call, a technical or design challenge, and a half day of in-person interviews. We move quickly and responsively and will always tell you where you stand. We believe that it's easy to find people, but it takes time to find extraordinary people. As a company, running a great hiring process is the single most important thing that we can do.
