FundApps is a financial technology startup based in Old Street that helps investment managers comply with worldwide regulation. Our CEO Andrew White was named as one of the top 40 fintech innovators in Europe, and we were recently named one of the top 50 fintech startups in Europe.
The legislation around investments is complex and changing all the time - particularly with regards to when & what you have to disclose to regulators. In a nutshell, our product Rapptr gives customers a simple way of managing this and staying on top of the latest rules. Our customers send us portfolios which we analyze with rules that represent regulations around the world. They then use a web based dashboard to discover and manage this process of monitoring their holdings (with respect to the regulations) and making the required disclosures to the regulators.
Our competition is stuck in the dark ages when it comes to software development. Slow, clunky, complicated user interfaces which look like they were designed by crazy scientists are the norm and we're shaking up an entire industry by providing beautiful & intuitive web-based software.

Andrew White managed to bumble his way into finance. One day he was asked to design and code a compliance monitoring engine for an investment manager. He did what he was told and a few months later MIG21 (Managing Investment Guidelines for the 21st Century (yeah, dodgy name)) was born and went on to become the dominant post-trade compliance engine in Europe (55 clients). But it was old & clunky software requiring multiple servers, DBs, middleware and a legion of IT people to keep it up and running. Also with financial regulation getting more tight week by week, most customers were struggling to implement the [same] regulation in MIG21.
After selling the company in 2009 Andrew took a year and backpacked from Mexico to Rio. After a couple of months in downtown Copacabana he was sitting on the beach and found himself drawing architecture diagrams in the sand rather than observing the lovely view (cold beer in hand). A couple of days later Andrew was back in London with a plan...
The background was clear:
1) Regulatory compliance for financial service was not going away and was getting much more difficult
2) Cloud was coming and financial institutions would have to embrace it to fight spiralling costs.
So he reckoned with cloud-based SaaS and a centralised regulation team encoding the financial regulation into algorithms there would be a great market opportunity...
After meeting his co-founder and CTO James Crowley in TechHub soon after, momentum gathered and the industry started to show interest. 4 years later and FundApps has 2 of the world's 10 largest hedge funds as clients as well as one of the USA's 10 largest pension funds. The team is growing rapidly as financial institutions try and break away from bespoke developments and learn to love the cloud!
