In 2009, fresh off their previous successful startup, friends Dave, Dave, and Nick set out to build a new "base" that any tech stack could be built on. This base would provide a foundation that would scale, survive faults, be screaming fast, and would be easy to build on. And, like the company they would build around it, the technology would have a simple structure, tons of thought put into it, and be a blast to work with. We would build the FoundationDB K/V store.

When we set out to build an entirely new database, we knew we'd need the performance of a language like C++ with the elegant concurrency of Erlang. After evaluating our options, we created Flow, a new programming language that brings actor-based concurrency to C++11. We've not only built languages -- we built extensive simulation testing tools and custom-built performance analysis and diagnostic tools. Having these awesome tools make working on our hard problems fun, fast, and exciting.

We're not just building a database, we're building an ecosystem. We now have a SQL engine on the K/V store as well as growing graph and document offerings. The challenges and opportunities are only growing!
