The role of a User Experience (UX) Designer is to create a customer experience that will inspire loyalty and satisfaction by designing a product that is intuitive and easy to use. UX Designers use research and good communication skills to fully understand the user’s needs and may be required to take on the user role during the testing period. Another approach the Designer may take is to analyze the competitor’s products and create a customer analysis of what they like and dislike about it. UX Designers may be tasked with creating mock-ups, prototypes and user-testing studies all designed to gather feedback from the client. Understanding of HTML, CSS and other style languages can be an asset. They then collaborate with the product and engineering teams to create flows, wireframes, storyboards and prototypes in order to ensure a high-quality end product and experience.
UX Designers may find that the end user does not want the basic functionality of the software or app changed but rather the look and feel, which can be changed with skins, stylesheets and updated layouts or graphics. UX Designers may also be asked to create sales paraphernalia, help in launch deals or assist with other communications of the product to the public as they are the closest to knowing the needs and wants of the target groups and potential clients. Essential qualifications for UX Designers include creativity, attention to detail, time management skills, design and programming skills and technology awareness. Degrees in media design or software engineering are not always required but will bolster a candidate’s resume.
