An IT Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of any IT-related pursuit or goal. They are charged with organizing team members and time resources, in order to ensure that the project is completed as efficiently as possible within a set timeline. To achieve this, some of their duties may involve developing schedules for different team members, setting project plans and identifying short-term and long-term goals. IT Project Managers may also be involved with the budget as well as resource sourcing and allocation. They prepare proposals, manage inter-business communication and provide regular update reports for managers or board members.
IT Project Managers typically work on projects with large-scale initiatives and impact. They work an average of 40 hours every week and are closely connected to most of the different levels of the project. For projects spread across multiple locations, IT Project Managers may be required to travel frequently to conduct meetings and consult with project team members. IT Project Managers aren’t just limited to technology companies. They may also work in industries such as healthcare, utilities, retail and distribution, career development and financial services. Although having a degree in IT or a related field is not considered a core requirement, having experience in engineering or information technology is considered an asset, as it provides the manager with some degree of credibility with team members. Most companies also require that IT Project Managers have several years of experience in order to be considered for the position.
