Gaming Engineer Job Description

Gaming engineers manage the software programs on which games are built. Their job may include developing gaming programs, creating specific gaming mechanics or ensuring cross-platform compatibility. They may also be required to debug or troubleshoot video games for smoother play. Gaming engineers often work in teams that include game designers, software developers and software engineers.

Gaming engineers typically work long hours during the week, especially when close to a game release deadline. They may work on games intended for the web, PC, mobile device or gaming consoles. In addition to being creative and having strong analytical and communication skills, gaming engineers are expected to have a strong knowledge of coding languages like Java and C++.
