Systems Administrators in some companies are also referred to as system operators (SysOps) or application support engineers (ASE). They handle backup procedures, software upgrades and patches. They perform security monitoring to make sure a computer system is running smoothly. SysAdmins understand resource requirements for applications, network services and access controls. They can provide technical support within an organization, as well as train and supervise staff.
SysAdmins have a good knowledge of computer security that may involve maintaining intrusion detection systems and firewalls. They do routine automation and troubleshoot to ensure servers and multi-user computers are running at peek performance. These technicians are also responsible for developing standards and procedures. Systems Administrators communicate well with colleagues to relate necessary information to get the job completed. These techs may also have certifications like Microsoft MCSE, Oracle Linux System Administrator and RHCE (Red Hat).
