Network Engineers develop and manage computer networks. Their duties include designing everything from local area networks to wide area networks. Other responsibilities may include troubleshooting network issues, performing system upgrades, securing network systems and defining and monitoring network access. They configure routing and switching equipment and may recommend upgrades on network hardware. Depending on the complexity of the network, they may work alone or alongside several engineers.

In order to effectively perform their jobs, Network Engineers must understand a company’s needs and organization. Most engineers typically possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or a related field as well as vendor-specific certifications such as the CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional).
