Scala is a general purpose programming language with a source code that is intended to be compiled into Java bytecode. Developers should have a deep understanding of Scala, its libraries and how to connect to other open source tools. Applications could be web-based Java applications, J2EE applications and a variety of others. Large companies that have utilized Scala include Twitter, Verizon, Airbnb and Morgan Stanley. Scala developers are often tasked with scoping the project, prioritizing tasks, implementing software and debugging the software. Documentation of the software is often handled by the developer.

Employers typically require candidates to have a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a related field. Experience in the field is a bonus. Candidates should be comfortable working in a team or alone. They should be able to demonstrate creativity, good communication skills in both verbal and written forms and a deep understanding of cloud computing. Scala developers should be comfortable using different open source tools and be able to evaluate new technologies for opportunities. Big data and machine learning are both areas that the candidate should be comfortable in or be willing to learn about. Out-of-the-box thinking and creativity are highly sought-after skills for Scala professionals.
