Network Administrators work with computers, usually managing an organization’s computer system ensuring that it is well-maintained and kept up to date. Some of their duties might include program installation, upgrades, security and performance testing. Network Administrators work for a variety of organizations from the government to manufacturers. Within a small organization, they may handle all of the day-to-day tasks of the computer department. In larger organizations, they might be responsible for only a part of the network, such as managing the IT Help Desk, purchasing software or maintaining its security system.
A minimum of a four-year degree in Information Technology, Systems Administration or Computer Science is often required for entry-level jobs in this field. Professional certification and experience with routers, firewalls and network configurations is also a plus.
