Rust is a systems programming language that is syntactically similar to C++. It is an open source language that is sponsored by Mozilla Research and has been implemented in many industries, but it may be most famous for its role in the secure blockchain technology. Rust developers are often asked to be versed in several disciplines within computer science including operating systems, compiler languages and language design. They should also have a strong understanding of distributed systems, which includes consensus protocols and distributed state synchronization and locking. Preference may go with candidates that have experience with software that includes scalability, predictability and reliability.
Employers usually ask that a Rust developer hold at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or mathematics. Some positions that are at a higher level may require a Masters or PhD. Experience in certain fields is vital such as functional programming concepts, event loop or writing in native C++. A candidate should also be able to confidently discuss software architecture and explain their ideas to both internal and external engineers. Most work is done in teams so a candidate should be comfortable working either with a team or leading a team.
