Product Designer Job Description

Product Designers work in a wide variety of industries and are largely responsible for the design or improvement of everyday products such as appliances, house wares, furniture, phones and cars. More specialized fields include telecommunication device manufacturing and medical device manufacturing. When a Product Designer is tasked with improving an already existing product, it is usually to improve functionality or appearance or even to devise a way to reduce manufacturing costs. Common tasks asked of a Product Designer include creating concepts and representing them through drawings, illustrations or modeling, doing research on specific products, staying up-to-date on current market trends, communications with other groups and departments and the ability to modify or revise designs to fit customer needs or manufacturing limitations. A candidate should be able to demonstrate abilities in choosing appropriate materials, strong collaboration skills, creativity, organization and teamwork. Technology skills that are highly sought after include proficiency in computer assisted design (CAD), blueprint and drawing skills and 3D modeling. A successful candidate should hold a degree in either engineering or design.

The product design field attracts a variety of professionals, with 54% of the industry being male and 46% being female. Most Product Designers have one to four years of experience before moving on to another field or a more specified field. However, 6% of designers will stay in the same career path for 20 years or more.
