In the world of web development, there are dozens of different roles focusing on the front and back ends of websites. A relatively new role is that of the Build and Release Engineer, an essential component of the DevOps process. Build and Release Engineers focus on building automation and packaging software releases as well as managing source code and repositories. The nature of their work requires them to collaborate directly with software engineers, taking their source code and shifting it to an automated or continuous build environment. This process empowers fluid performance and minimizes the complexities surrounding website updates, security patches, bug fixes and other routine maintenance tasks.
Due to the specialized nature of their tasks, Build/Release Engineers have unique skill sets, primarily working with scripting and source control tools. A comprehensive knowledge of Subversion or Git, Hudson/Jenkins for continuous integration, Windows and Linux scripting savvy are vital to the role. Shell, Python and Perl scripting expertise and a working knowledge of software build tools like Maven, Ant and Gradle are also essential skill sets.
