Search Engineers are in a career that is focused around creating search algorithms, Web services, indexing techniques and methods to mine vast quantities of data in real-time. For a Search Engineer to succeed, building robust platforms that index billions of assets while closely working with others is paramount. In addition to creation, Search Engineers are expected to maintain and optimize these engines as well as identify and debug problem areas.
When it comes to educational requirements, Search Engineers are expected to have at least a four-year undergraduate degree in computer science. Many companies, however, will also require a graduate degree as well as several years of relevant experience and industry. Other requirements include being fluent in industry-standard languages such as Java and PHP, as well as having a firm understanding of Spark and Hadoop. Excellent communication and documentation skills are also a must.
