A Data Engineer can have different job duties depending on the industry and needs of the company. In many cases, the main role can be to build a system from the ground up that takes into account future growth and scalability. Qualification, experience and technical background requirements can also vary widely with most requiring knowledge with several languages, including SQL, Java, SAS, Hive, Python, Ruby, C++ and SPSS. Experience or knowledge of NoSQL databases and data warehousing solutions such as Hadoop are also helpful. A Data Engineer with a genuine interest in a wide range of server technologies doesn't hurt.
While being a Data Engineer for one company has variables, those that have a need for even more change and challenges will enjoy consulting firms. Rather than building and maintaining a database for one company, a consulting firm has multiple clients. As long as there are companies that choose not to handle their own databases or have special projects, there will always be demand for Data Engineers.
