The legal industry provides a vital service to society. Legal professionals ensure that people have access to the legal advice they need. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more than 1 million people employed in the legal industry and the industry is expected to grow by 9 percent by 2026. Most people associate the legal industry with lawyers, but there are actually numerous jobs of all types within the industry. Internet legal services like LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer, for example, employ software developers, coders and customer service representatives as well as lawyers and paralegals.

Law firms, government agencies, corporations and non-profit entities all employ legal professionals. Many legal jobs require some form of specialized training. Lawyers, for example, need to have a bachelor's degree as well as a law degree. They also need to pass the bar exam in their state. Lawyers specialize in different areas of law depending on their interests, including tax law, corporate law, criminal law and environmental law. Paralegals provide support to lawyers. Typically, a paralegal needs either an associate's degree or a certificate in paralegal studies. Court reporters have specialized training or certification. Other professionals who work in the legal industry need a degree or certification in their area of expertise. IT professionals who work in the legal industry, for example, need certification in the IT field. A background in legal work may be helpful but typically isn't required for these positions.
