Engineering Managers supervise and lead a team of engineers during the development, testing and modification stages of projects. They help with the creation of solutions in order to resolve complex technical issues. Engineering Managers coordinate and direct operations, production and quality assurance. They may aid in the management and placement of engineering services to outside vendors, provide final approval of products being manufactured and consult with upper management such as the Director of Engineering. These specialized managers may hire and train support staff and engineers. They will discuss with their team the project specifications along with detailed plans to keep everything on schedule and budget to accomplish the task. Engineering Managers initiate procedures, standards and administrative policies. They also write performance reviews, as well as prepare bids, contracts and budgets.

Engineering Managers usually possess a bachelors in engineering and business or a MEM (Master of Engineering Management) degree. They acquire a professional engineers license or PE and have five or more years of work-related experience. Engineering Managers are knowledgeable in computer programming and applications. They have excellent communication, math, leadership, analytical, organizational and critical thinking skills. These specialized managers understand finance and accounting, Lean Sigma or Six Sigma, project management, operations research and information systems. They have no problem coordinating activities within departments, are able to negotiate research contracts and write performance reviews to solve internal issues. Engineering Managers know how to read blueprints and operate engineering software. They may also have various forms of certification, including a PEM.
