The Electronics Industry has grown into a global industry with a value of billions of dollars. Most commonly when referring to the electronics industry it is understood the industry is consumer electronics which produces items used in everyday life such as office productivity, communications and entertainment. A large portion of the industry is now focused on digital technology. Common manufactured equipment includes medical monitoring devices, communication equipment, navigational equipment and computers. Because the industry is so vast, there are many employment opportunities and titles that fall under the Electronics umbrella. A large number of employees fall under the titles of electronic engineers and electronic technicians.

Electronic technicians are responsible for designing, developing, testing, manufacturing, installing and repairing electrical and electronic equipment. Candidates should be able to demonstrate strong technical skills, troubleshooting skills and attention to detail. Other aptitudes that are often sought after include organization skills and computer competencies. Most employers ask that a candidate have an associate’s degree in electrical technology or be able to show a completion of an apprenticeship program. Because safety is such an important aspect of the job, candidates should be aware of guidelines issued by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and should be comfortable educating clients or employers on how to safely operate or maintain equipment. An electronics technician can advance into careers such as electrical engineer, field service technician, senior engineering technician, electrical design engineer, civil engineer, field service engineer for medical equipment or HVAC service technician.
