The retail landscape has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Retail was once a brick-and-mortar industry, comprised of small, independently owned-and-operated businesses and large chain stores with multiple outposts throughout the country. The retail industry was the same worldwide, with small mom-and-pop stores and large chain stores dotting landscapes in almost every country.

The landscape remained constant until the advent of the world wide web, which changed retail completely by offering a vast selection, competetive prices, fast shipping and other incentives that brick and mortar stores simply couldn't keep up with. The largest eCommerce business, Amazon, launched in 1995; its popularity, combined with a proliferation of other online retail businesses, helped make eCommerce a $150B industry by 1999.

By the 2000s, eCommerce eclipsed traditional retail businesses completely; the industry continues to grow, with a projected 56 percent expansion between 2015 and 2020. Brick-and-mortar outlets are only expected to expand by 2 percent during the same five year time frame. In 2017, 1.66B people purchased products online; this number is expected to increase proportionately worldwide.

The eCommerce environment, unlike most industries, is completely online. This creates thousands of job opportunites, from logistics and supply chain experts to website developers, software engineers, app developers, coders, UX/UI experts, copywriters and more. It's also created hundreds of related industries, from financial companies who specialize in providing merchant accounts to online businesses to entire platforms designed for easy eCommerce like Shopify and Zapier.
