Data Engineers primarily work with data, transforming it into an easily analyzed format. This is done by developing, maintaining and testing different infrastructures for data generation. Data Engineers usually work closely with data scientists and are in charge of the architecting solutions for the data scientist which enables them to do their job. Data Engineers are asked to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information technology, applied math or electrical engineering. For senior roles, employers prefer a Master’s Degree or certifications like the IBM Certified Data Engineer or Google’s Certified Professional. Companies that employ Data Engineers include Aetna, Advanced Geolocation Solutions, Tekstrom, United Health Group and ATN International.
There are four major types of consulting within the industry: management and strategic consulting, financial consulting, information technology consulting and human resources and staffing consulting. Most data engineering will fall under the information technology consulting umbrella which is designed to help clients implement or develop good IT practices, train staff in areas such as hardware or software setup, network setup and computer security or provide advice on social media and IT issues. Consulters can be from large firms such as Accenture, Mercer and McKinsey & Company or can be firms that are operated by just a few knowledgeable people.
