Unix/Linux Administrator - I

We are currently recruiting for the position of a Unix/Linux Administrator to support our work with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA.

Description:

You will be involved with performing administration and maintenance activities on various UNIX and Linux servers in use at the USPTO. The servers supported are located in both production and test data centers located on the USPTO campus. Additional remote support is provided for systems located at the USPTO Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Data Center located in Pennsylvania.

Duties performed may include, but not be limited to, the following:

* Will assist with providing administration, troubleshooting, configuration, installation, deployment, maintenance, upgrades, and high availability design projects.
* Provide day-to-day operational support including responding to incidents, troubleshooting, and executing corrective action. ITSM Problem Records will be assigned to the Contractor records following the initial triage that has been performed by the OS Operations Section, CIO Command Center Branch (C3) or the Service Desk. Problem resolution may involve identification of complex system problems, restarting failing services, complete software reload, and/or system level file recovery.
* When necessary, interact with software vendors to reach problem resolution. This may include opening a service call with the vendor, providing logs, and responding to advice received by phone call or email.
* Follow established escalation procedures
* Escalate technical issues to the appropriate Section Manager when it becomes apparent that the problem has exceeded basic outage timeframes.
* Analyze issues as they relate to the USPTO environment. The analysis shall include a written document along with an action plan to remediate the problem, initiate a new process or procedure, roll out products and/or enhance current operations.
* Provide support documentation as needed, including:
* installation procedures
* rollback procedures
* troubleshooting assistance that includes common problems/issues
* knowledge packs
* root cause analysis
* USPTO application administration guidance such as log file location, regular monitoring procedures and system restart procedures
* Application procedures for basic functionality testing (Smoke Test)


* Maintaining and developing Redhat Enterprise Virtualization Environment (RHEV).
* Developing and maintaining installation and configuration procedures for new server builds.
* Troubleshooting hardware and software problems with AIX, HP-UX and Redhat servers.
* Writing custom start scripts for various applications.
* Evaluating and implementing potential new tools and technologies.
* Preparing project plans (schedules, task assignments, resource estimations) for major technical initiatives assigned to the team.
* Writing and maintaining technical documentation for new and existing projects.
* Providing escalation support for junior staff members as appropriate.
* Mentoring junior staff members as appropriate.

Work Experience/Skills Requirements:

Successful candidates will have experience identified using the technologies and supporting the environments that follow below:

* 2-3 years UNIX/Linux system administration supporting a medium to large user base (3,000-10,000 users).
* Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 and 7
* Experience with HP-UX, AIX, Tomcat, Oracle, Apache/iPlanet and MySQL.
* Strong knowledge of virtualization: XEN, KVM, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV)
* Strong knowledge of LVM and Red Hat satellite servers.
* Experience working with and troubleshooting storage issues.
* Experience with various UNIX/LINUX monitoring tools.
* Ability to write Shell scripts for automation of routine tasks.
* RHCSE, RHCE and RHCVA certifications are preferred.

Hours/Shift:

Support for the USPTO is 24x7x365, so hours/shift will vary depending on the position being filled.

Clearance Requirements:

* Must be able to hold a security clearance. You do not need a current/active clearance to apply, but must be able to pass a government Public Trust (SF-85) background investigation.
* Candidates must be either a Green Card Holder or US Citizen to be eligible for the Public Trust Clearance.
