Overview

Simon & Schuster has an exciting role for a front-end developer with UI/UX experience and a passion for analytics and data visualization to join a fast-paced, leading-edge team working to help advance its publishing business. In this role, you will be working with a small team of data scientists and analysts to rapidly prototype data applications and analytics tools to serve our fast-growing imprint.

The full-time, contract position will report into the Director Data Science and Analytics and will be responsible for developing robust data applications and reporting tools that align with the business needs of our team.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to play a key role in building an analytics platform from the ground up. You'll be working with a small team of professionals based remotely. Hours are flexible. Two scheduled check-ins/code reviews are required weekly.

Responsibilities

* Conduct research and deconstruct our internal users digital interactions, habits.


* Develop UI and UX strategies based on our target goals.


* Create and maintain digital assets, such as interface design files, wireframes, and interactive mockups.


* Design, build, and maintain highly reusable JavaScript, HTML and CSS code.


* Collaborate with team to develop data visualizations that support inference and analysis by a wide range of stakeholders


* Creating custom visualizations that help decision makers quickly understand the underlying data.


* Develop the user interface and design of dashboards, static reports, notifications and other reporting tools.


* Understand the limitations of our tech stack and business model and provide technical advice wherever necessary.



QUALIFICATIONS:

* 3+ years' experience as a front-end developer.


* 2+ years' experience as a UI/UX designer.


* A portfolio that demonstrates both JavaScript proficiency and understanding of solid design principles


* Experience Node.js, Django, React Native, Material.io or similar front-end frameworks and tools.


* Expert knowledge of CSS, CSS extension languages (Less, Sass), and CSS preprocessor tools.


* Expert knowledge of HTML5 and its best practices


* Familiarity with D3.js and data visualization tools preferred.


* Familiarity with Python preferred but not required.


* Demonstrated ability to design interfaces that can be viewed across a range of devices (responsive design).


* Proficiency in building wireframes and clickable prototypes using Framer, Sketch, InVision or similar tools


* Familiarity with the information design concepts such as the 'Grammar of Graphics' and statistical plotting techniques preferred but not required.


* A history of deconstructing user behavior to create an improved experience for users, showcased in the form of blog posts, articles, screencasts, etc.


* Knowledge of Git/GitHub and software development workflows


* Strong written and verbal communication skills.


* Passionate about building tools that support strong feedback loops and user engagement
