About the Job

Chicago Public Media, home to WBEZ, Chicago's NPR news station, is looking for a UI / UX Engineer to help bring beauty, usability, and best practice to the next generation of our digital news products, including web, mobile, and smart speaker experiences. Help us build the future of public radio.

This role demands a unique combination of creative and technical skills; Working with the Lead Software Engineer and Director of Product, you will have a keen sense for design, as well as strong coding abilities in a variety of front end programming languages.

In addition to helping design and code front end experiences, the ideal candidate will have experience in prototyping, and testing web and mobile applications with the goal of driving product success through creating and optimizing superior user experiences.

You will have a strong voice in essential design decisions, and work closely with a cross-functional team of thought leaders and content creators to create best-in-class digital news experiences for our audiences.

Technical & Creative Skills Required

Portfolio-proven mastery of user interface design, typography, and eye-catching visual imagery
Expertise in HTML5, CSS3 and Vanilla JS
Understanding of at least one JS Framework (React / Angular), with a willingness to adopt and learn new frameworks on the job
Understanding of SASS and / or SCSS
Experience using Node JS in conjunction with build tools such as Gulp and Webpack in command line
Strong understanding of performance implications and speed optimization of frontend web applications

Additional Requirements

Excellent communication skills, and a penchant for collaborative workflows
An excitement for news and an interest in public media.
This position requires frequent onsite collaboration

Not Required, but Appreciated

Familiarity with Cloud Computing services such as AWS
Familiarity with one or more backend programming languages
Experience with front-end media streaming technology
Experience with user-testing and interaction design
