Job Description

Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a computational physicist position within the Computational Plasma Physics Group (CPPG) to work on the development of TRANSP, an equilibrium and transport solver used worldwide for the analysis and modeling of tokamak plasma discharges and for experimental planning. The position will be based in Princeton NJ.

Responsibilities

TRANSP is an equilibrium and transport solver used worldwide for the analysis and modeling of tokamak plasma discharges and for experimental planning, including projections to future fusion devices.

We are looking for a computational physicist to contribute to the development, support and maintenance of TRANSP, including coupling of additional, external physics models, as required for the advancement of the capabilities of the code. TRANSP has a pool of international users, spanning the United States, Europe and Asia, which is continuously growing. As such, candidates are required to provide support to users, they should be team oriented and possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated technical knowledge of numerical analysis, parallel computing, software development and large-scale scientific computing in a physics or engineering-related environment. We seek contribution particularly in two areas. The first area is the maintenance and development of the modules for radiofrequency heating and current drive. The second area is the coupling of TRANSP with a model for the Scrape-Off-Layer. Experience in RF physics and/or in plasma edge physics is therefore highly desirable.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Mathematics or Engineering with a background in Physics and demonstrated experience in large-scale computational modeling. Experience in plasma physics and/or in Fusion is desirable. Familiarity with FORTRAN and shell scripting is required, familiarity with C/C++ and Python is highly desirable. The position and salary will be commensurate with the experience of the applicant.

Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
