Help Duties Summary

NHTSA is looking for an experienced Traffic Safety Data Analyst to complete projects that provides interdisciplinary support to NCSA's data reporting program in support of NHTSA's highway safety program.

The main data sources for analyses are the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) General Estimates System (GES)/Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS).

Responsibilities

As a Traffic Safety Data Analyst, you will:

* Produce reports and research notes that improve quantitative knowledge of the causes and results of motor vehicle traffic crashes using descriptive data techniques to support NHTSA's highway traffic safety program activities.
* Participate in developing the overall approach and methods for analyzing and reporting motor vehicle crash data from FARS and GES/CRSS as related to behavioral and vehicle safety programs; specifying data sources, analytical techniques, and the schedule for reporting.
* Provide analytical support and guidance on motor vehicle crash data to other offices in the agency and regions.
* Provide data retrieval support in the division using data from FARS and GES/CRSS. As an example Statistical Analysis System (SAS) is one of the main retrieval tools used in the agency for all data retrieval, analyses, and query.
* Partake in the annual assessment activities relating to the annual FARS/CRSS data file release.
* Work with Office of Communication and Consumer Information (OCCI) in support of the media related activities like Click It Or Ticket (CIOT), Impaired Driving campaign and others.
* Contribute to the preparation of briefings, Congressional inquiry responses, correspondence and short, quick turnaround assignments.

The ideal candidate will have experience in navigating these systems. Strong communication skills are a must as the candidate will be writing research notes, preparing presentation and briefing materials, and advising and consulting the Division Chief, Office Director and other NHTSA staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

FOR THE GS-11, to qualify, you must have one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09, which includes the following:

* Experience analyzing large volumes of data using relational data bases.

FOR THE GS-11, to qualify on Education, you must have:

* 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
* You can also qualify based on a combination of education and experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
