Overview

Position Overview

Responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance and monitoring of network, telecommunications and data center infrastructure components as well as the provision of customer service and support for a broad range of network devices and systems, including maintaining network performance and network security standards.

Responsibilities

Under immediate supervision and in accordance with standard policy and practices performs any or all of the following;

Performs routine to complex technical work associated with the installation, configuration, administration and maintenance of wired and wireless network hardware, operating systems, network management applications, and supporting appliances Performs routine to complex technical work associated with the installation, configuration, administration and maintenance of telephony systems and devices, and telecommunications circuits. In conjunction with or at the direction of the network manager, ensures system-wide network infrastructure is functioning to provide an optimal end user computing experience, and assists in troubleshooting and resolving network problems as related to end user device, application, database or server performance. Assists in managing device software, hardware and license inventory and maintenance of appropriate files, records and statistics relating to areas of responsibility and insures compliance with Library policy. Assists in determining network requirements by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements, configures route administration, including interface configuration and routing protocols. In accordance with existing policies and procedures, maintains system-wide IP configuration data; system-wide VLAN scope information; network access, security, routing and failover configuration policies. Maintains systems for alerting, monitoring and device logging in accordance with existing with library security policies and procedures. In conjunction with the Network Manager, maintains network services levels by analyzing network performance issues including availability, utilization, throughput, goodput, and latency; planning and executing the selection, installation, configuration, and testing of equipment; configuring network policies and procedures; establishing connections and implementing and maintaining firewalls. Secures network by configuring network access policies, monitoring access policy usage, evaluating and enhancing policies and maintaining documentation. Has the ability to perform a network packet capture with industry standard tools and analyze packets to their component levels for the purpose of network problem resolution. In conjunction with the Network Manager maintains and upgrades network by coordinating and conferring with vendors, including through problem escalation procedures, as well as developing, testing, evaluating, and installing enhancements; to ensure maximum availability of Library technology. Interacts with public and staff and provides excellent customer service. Participates in professional development and continuing education opportunities. Functions as a team member on IT-related assigned projects Identifies opportunities for IT process improvements targeting improved customer service and IT organizational efficiency. Participates in system-wide technology and process planning for the BPL IT. Assists with training as required - demonstrates for IT staff and trains IT staff in use of hardware and software. Creates custom network-related technical help procedures and documentation for staff. Assumes responsibilities for proper functioning of the Team/Department in absence of superiors. Undertakes local travel as required to BPL locations In exceptional circumstances may be required to travel to MBLN locations. Participates in rotating on-call systems support schedule. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education - High School graduate or equivalent. Associate or Bachelor Degree preferred.

Experience - Two to four years work experience in a network administration role, at least two which will be above entry level providing direct support of network connectivity, hardware and software within an enterprise environment. Familiarity with Cisco IOS and additional non-Cisco networking systems. CheckPoint, BlueCoat and/or Blue Socket systems preferred.

Specialized Qualifications: CompTIA Network+ or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent required. Experience in LAN/WAN administration, Network Performance Tuning, Network Design and Implementation preferred. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
