The system programmer performs the following tasks:

* Planning hardware and software system upgrades and changes in configuration
* Training system operators and application programmers
* Automating operations
* Performing capacity planning
* Running installation jobs and scripts
* Performing installation-specific customization tasks
* Integration-testing the new products with existing applications and user procedures
* System-wide performance tuning to meet required levels of service

A systems programmer should have a minimum 3 years of experience with:

* Understanding how z/OS and its subsystems are configured, activated, started, stopped, queried and dynamically modified
* Problem Determination/Problem Source Identification (PD/PSI)
* Familiarization with TSO, JES, Communications Server, SDSF, Unix Systems Services (USS), Systems-Managed Storage (DFSMS), Workload Manager (WLM)
* Comfortable with use of TSO and ISPF for creating/editing/deleting datasets and PDS members
* Comfortable with use of SDSF for control of z/OS and JES
* Comfortable with use of Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF) for allocating/cataloging datasets into appropriate user catalogs
* Comfortable with using console commands to monitor and control z/OS and subsystems
