Job Description

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated automation engineer to join a world-class NGS group that provides many diverse genomic technologies to Genentech's Research in support of drug discovery and development effort. A successful candidate will work in the cutting edge, high-throughput NGS lab to develop and implement automation solutions for new genomic applications and workflows including sample QC, library generation, quantification and data generation. The candidate will also collaborate with cross-functional research groups and vendors to enable integration and utility of multiple automation platforms for additional workflows that are outside of NGS.

Responsibilities:

* Working closely with researchers to implement and support automated solutions for workflows pertaining to NGS including sample processing, library generation and purification, quantification, etc.
* Operating and troubleshooting liquid handling robotics and other key instruments and workflows
* Designing, programming and simulating new protocols, integrating them across multiple systems
* Training and providing ongoing support to end-users of automated workflows in the department
* Performing routine precision/accuracy determination and coordinating the maintenance of instruments as needed
* Driving improvements to increase throughput, promote efficiency and reduce the cost

Qualifications:

* BA/BS degree with 3-5 years or MS with 2-4 years of relevant academic or industry experience
* Operational expertise with automation, data management and/or process management
* Knowledge of any of the following scripting languages: Java, C#, Python
* Experience with programming liquid handlers (e.g. Tecan, Hamilton, Agilent Bravo)
* Hands-on experience with integrating liquid handlers, robotic arms, plate readers or plate washers into fully automated systems
* Experience in converting manually conducted assays or protocols into fully automated routines
* Experience with integration of laboratory equipment to laboratory information systems (LIMS)
* A mindset to guide users in order to enable wider adoption of automation in their workflows
* Demonstrable ability to troubleshoot and rectify problems in automated processes
* Knowledge of basic scientific principles in biology, chemistry, biochemistry is a plus
* Meticulous, patient and organized with excellent problem solving and analytical skills
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Must be a motivated, self-directed individual who can complete projects in a collaborative team-oriented setting
