Job Description

As a staff level fluidic systems engineer at Illumina, you will work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment to drive the development of genomic analysis tools that enable leading-edge research. You will be a key contributor to integrated and multidisciplinary teams, developing new, and improving existing, technology platforms. Primary responsibilities include developing novel fluidic architectures through analytical modelling and empirical testing that will drive designs, primarily in complex, highly integrated instruments and/or disposable devices. You are a highly motivated individual with the ability to work cross-functionally in areas of fluidics, optics, and biochemistry, and adapt quickly to changing roles throughout the

product development process - from early innovation and architecture stages through manufacturing transfer and commercialization.

Duties:

* Define product architectures, with a focus on fluidic systems, by translating requirements of complex multi-disciplinary systems into possible candidates to be explored and down-selected
* Design and employ fluidic system models to inform product architecture. This can include reagent exchange and volume models, run-time budgets, COGS models, etc.
* Conduct first-principle and CFD analyses to characterize both continuous and/or multi-phase fluid flow
* Work cross-functionally to translate biochemistry requirements (i.e. reaction kinetics) into innovative and platform-enabling fluidics architectures
* Identify and characterize appropriate critical parameters to achieve high reliability and robustness and lifetime performance
* Lead technical teams to troubleshoot complex fluidics systems, developing characterization tools, identifying root cause and implementing corrective action
* Support the selection and qualification of critical suppliers/partners for product development and manufacturing

Qualifications:

* B.S. in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Systems Engineering or related field (advanced degree advantageous)
* (5+ years of) product development experience, from early stage to manufacturing transfer, within an R&D or new product development group
* Experience in fluidic architecture development for products integrating microfluidics, chemistry/assay and sensing components
* Strong analytical background, with record of using system models to down-select and drive decisions
* Proficiency in fluidics analysis - both analytical and computational (i.e. COMSOL) - is a must
* Proficiency in CAD with a demonstrated ability to design, build, and test prototypes
* Demonstrated experience with experimental design and troubleshooting, with a track record of leading root-cause investigations and driving to resolution
* Strong statistical analysis skills, using tools such as Excel, JMP, MiniTab, to interpret data, is preferred
* Hands-on experience in microbiology or biochemistry labs is preferred
