The SQL Cache Group is responsible for caching and management of SQL metadata. It is also responsible for the caching and access of compiled SQL statements, as well as compiled PLSQL program units.
SQL is a declarative metadata driven language. Metadata management is fundamental to modern SQL based relational databases. Metadata is used during the compilation and execution of SQL statements. Synchronizing the modification of the metadata with use is critical for both good performance and the correctness of the system. The group is responsible for the interfaces that manage the SQL metadata. This includes caching the data in shared memory for performance, synchronizing changes to the metadata, and propagating metadata changes to affected dependent objects.
Knowledge and understanding of issues dealing with parallel programming, thread programming, concurrency control and scalability are critical in this area, as this code layer impacts database performance at many levels. Exposure to similar issues at the OS level would be considered advantageous.
