UW Medicine's Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine and Airlift Northwest. In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children's University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children's). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.

The Sr. Network Security Engineer ('Engineer') will work as a member of the ITS Enterprise Network and Threat Prevention team which is responsible for providing reliable, high bandwidth, secure, and resilient network services to UW Medicine.

The Engineer will possess technical expertise and knowledge to support a broad range of network security related services and technical expertise in network routing, firewalling, user and site virtual private networking (VPN), Intrusion Detection Services (IDS), Data Loss Protection (DLP), load balancing, data center switching, IP provisioning, VLAN provisioning, network monitoring, and proactive log analysis. The incumbent will install, maintain, test, and debug network and security infrastructure hardware and software.

The Engineer will report to the Enterprise Network and Threat Prevention Supervisor and will collaborate with other Engineers on the team. The incumbent will be required to develop and maintain strong working relationships in ITS as well as with other UW Medicine and University departments. The position provides technical network infrastructure support to clients, systems managers, system operators, and technical personnel of varying levels of expertise. The incumbent must be able to think independently and critically and work at the highest technical levels.

UW Medicine relies on ITS to provide enterprise-wide technological solutions and electronic information 24x7, 365 days a year to enable the quickest and most reliable healthcare for its patients. Unavailability of this information and solutions can have a direct impact to loss of revenue, as well as a potential to cause harm to our patients. This position is part of ITS' Enterprise Network and Threat Prevention team which creates the secure physical and virtual pathways for the flow of electronic information. The team is available 24x7 to support the mission of the UW Medicine.

Responsibilities include:

Providing consulting services to UW Medicine entities for security design, system connectivity, access control, issue diagnosis, problem resolution and ongoing general support as they relate to data center and enterprise wide network infrastructure and related components. (20%)

Provide primary, secondary, or technical lead responsibilities for network security related operational and project activities. (20%)

Manage and support all network related services and systems including: L2/L3 firewalls, IDS, DLP, VPN, user remote access, network switches, load balancers and a variety of monitoring, management and notification systems. (20%)

Design and implement network infrastructure solutions, configurations and architecture, including hardware and software technology in support of UW Medicine data center and enterprise network operations. (10%)

Assist in the implementation of effective network security logging and alerting. Provide dashboard / regular reporting of network security and exception statistics. Analyze and evaluate network security threats and vulnerabilities. Recommend appropriate safeguards, actions and notifications. (10%)

Participate in on-call responsibilities in support of a 24/7 production environment. (10%)

Assist in the development and documentation of network policies, standards and guidelines. Promote network policies, standards and procedures through adherence in daily operational activities. (5%)

Work with hardware/software vendors to maintain operations, diagnose issues and resolve issues/problems. (5%)

What you'll bring to the table: (minimum requirements)

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education/experience.

6+ years experience must include the following:

Proven experience implementing, managing and maintaining security and network infrastructure for large scale enterprise, including hardware/software firewalls, VPN, remote access, datacenter networks switches, load balancers and a variety of monitoring systems.

In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP stack, Multicast and related troubleshooting. Must be able to capture, correlate and analyze network packet traffic.

Demonstrated experience with routing and protocols OSPF, BGP, Multicast STP, MSTP in large environments.

Demonstrated experience in the development and support of production mission critical systems and applications.

Ability to work with minimal supervision both independently and as part of a team.

Experience provide proactive log analysis for networks and security.

Experience with network scripting in Perl/Python/Ruby/Powershell.

Experience utilizing various web development tools.

Application development or system administration experience in UNIX, Linux, and Windows 2013+ environments.

Programming experience with tools such as C, C++,C#, Powershell, PHP, and HTML.

Industry-recognized professional certifications highly desirable.

Daily response to customer demands within imposed deadlines is required.

Requires participation in 24x7 on-call rotation as needed.
