Job Description

You are a leader of software engineers. You know how to create, motivate and run independent program teams. You firmly believe that matrix organizations are for relics of a bygone era. Agile is just the start - when your team gets moving they can deliver changes to customers continuously, and are not afraid to experiment on a daily basis with new ideas. When you are asked to help customers find, with a few clicks, items that meet stringent specification requirements, you are technical enough to see all the obstacles and creative enough to overcome them.

You know that amazing results come from the smart, hard-working people you surround yourself with. You don't disrespect your phenomenal team by calling them "resources" - even if they're not around to hear it. You prefer to have direct reports that you could see yourself reporting to. You create culture, give context, motivate people to common purpose, and then you give your team room to excel. You run out ahead and clear away obstacles your team never even knew were there.

About HCX

The Hardlines Customer Experience team (HCX) builds the software that makes it fun and engaging to shop for everything from skis to smart security systems to spa filters. By understanding customer intent, we make it easy to find the most suitable product, and by understanding their interests, we delight customers with products that feel handpicked by a personal assistant. We are software developers, designers, scientists, and product managers working big, interesting customer opportunities.

What you'll do as Software Development Manager

Have you ever tried to shop for a cozy paint color for your reading nook at home, that looks great on relaxing cloudy days? Or for a matching bronze screw to fix your loose kitchen cabinet? How about safe electrical wiring for your bathroom?

Today it is difficult for Amazon customers to find and shop for products that meet multiple specifications (like material, size, weight, strength, and shade), and purchasing these items from physical stores can require multiple frustrating trips to the hardware/home improvement store.

You will own software development and product strategy for specification-based shopping across all of Amazon Retail. Every week millions of customers shop for products on Amazon that must meet multiple specifications. You will scale our current programs internationally, build self-service features, and take this program BIG. Recognizing that there's often more to learn from failure than success, you'll experiment constantly. You'll double down when your experiments resonate with customers and deliver products that drive hundreds of millions in revenue. You'll inherit an effective team that enjoys each other's company, loves to solve problems, and will keep you on your toes. You'll look around corners, take great care of your team, build scalable systems, and know that if a challenge is not a little scary, it's probably not worth doing.
