Job Description

Amazon's product search engine indexes billions of products and serves hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. At Amazon search, you will be working alongside world-class engineers and scientists to build next-generation search systems.

In our newly opened office in Berkeley, we investigate and develop state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques that provide outsized benefits to Amazon's customers. We are a research-oriented team with strong ties to UC Berkeley and other universities and academic institutions.

We solve customer problems that require advancing the state-of-the-art in machine learning. We create value for search customers by addressing an underlying, unsolved scientific problem. To offset the inherent risks in scientific research, we work on projects where success would mean an outsized benefit to our customers.

The academic community is our customer, too. We believe in a virtuous cycle where contributions to the external research community are rewarded with greater academic interest in Amazon. We encourage our scientists and engineers to participate and publish in top conferences such as NIPS, ICML, KDD, SIGIR and WWW.

We create efficient, re-usable machine learning software. Our impact is multiplied when our solutions can be reused at Amazon scale by partner teams with related problems. When possible, we open-source our libraries.

We test our hypotheses in collaboration with other Amazon teams and we develop the systems necessary for experimentation.

We are looking to hire software development engineers at all levels, with experience in search, personalization, recommendations systems, natural language processing (NLP), distributed systems, deep learning (DL), artificial intelligence (AI), or other branches of machine learning. Internship opportunities are also available throughout the year and we are flexible about duration and start dates.
