The Browse organization lives at the heart of Amazon's world class Search system. We obsess over helping customers all across the globe find, explore and discover products within the biggest and best selection on the planet. In fact, we build and own the technology, tools, and systems to do just that!

Browse Assignment Platform team owns the system to classify products for Retail. We host Earth's largest selection; with more than a billion items in the catalog. Our Product Classification system classifies these products into categories (e.g. cameras, jeans, sofas). Once the items are classified, shoppers can then browse/search for products in various Amazon.com categories.

We are building a completely new classification platform for two reasons. Firstly, to support the earth's largest catalog selection ever to be, we need to revamp our existing systems to be able to scale to the new requirements. Secondly, product classification is critical for the success of various Amazon businesses like A9 search, TAX service computations etcetera. Today, there is no classification platform where the business teams can plug in their use cases which results in various teams building their own solution. Building a unified classification platform is a great opportunity to reduce the duplicated effort, improve the classification accuracy and help the success of various businesses across the breadth of Amazon.

The new classification platform will have to be highly scalable and efficient so as to be able to handle the huge dataset and complex classification rules. It also needs to be able to support a simple extensible model so that varied business use cases can be seamlessly plugged into it.

All of this provides you an amazing opportunity to build a highly scalable and extensible system from scratch. You are guaranteed to learn a lot about designing and developing distributed systems, big data systems and web services while pushing the boundaries of scale and performance. You are free to choose the most cutting edge technologies to meet the requirements. Some of the technologies we use in our existing systems include NoSQL databases like DynamoDB and Sable, SWF, Elastic Search etcetera. Your work will have a big impact and you will closely work with and learn from Senior and Principal engineers across different Orgs.
