UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.

UW-IT has an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Senior Network Engineer in our Network Design and Architecture (NDA) team.

We're seeking a Senior Network Engineer to help evaluate complex network and telecommunications technologies and create architectures, designs, and deployments of leading-edge network constructs suited to the needs of the University of Washington and its strategic network partners. Members of the NDA team design and help support networking services that are foundational to the missions of the University of Washington and our networking partners.

This team is a key part of the IT Infrastructure division in UW-IT supporting both wired and wireless networks. We work on networks of varying scales - from campus to international - including three University of Washington campuses with associated labs and facilities throughout the region; UW Medicine (3 hospitals and over a dozen clinics across the state); the Washington State K20 Network (300+ connectors); the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, the regional point of presence for research & education networking; the Pacific Wave international R&E peering facility; and the C3 optical ring around Lake Washington. In addition to supporting a variety of network scales, we also design, deploy, and operate partner-owned fiber, dwdm, and ethernet services; third party circuits; and a variety of L2/L3 network constructs.

This Network Engineer has three primary roles:

1)Network Architecture and Design

2)Network Services

3)Project Lead

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, engineering, telecommunications, technology business administration.

Six or more years' experience architecting, designing, and deploying advanced, large-scale, high-volume and reliable networks that is inclusive of both physical, logical and as well as software-defined networking constructs.

Identification, creation and deployment of virtualization and automation constructs to increase efficiency and reliability and decrease costs

Track record of successful, increased responsibility and decision making; successful design and deployment of major, large-scale leading-edge network constructs inclusive of automation and virtualization technologies.

Track record of successful evaluation and proof-of-concept of leading edge network technologies and tools.

Collaborates and partners with customers and coworkers to identify, evaluate and resolve complex network problems or service needs.

Focuses on results by setting and achieving goals.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and personal interaction abilities.

Ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team

Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:

Experience in a major higher education, research, and/or medical/healthcare organization.

Experience as a lead network engineer in a major national or international production network environment.

Foundations 3 certification

Prior experience using ServiceNow, Atlassian Confluence and JIRA), O365, Google Suite

Software coding tools & practices such as Agile, DevOps, Python, Ansible, Django, github, Containers

Familiarity with a variety of cloud constructs as they relate to network infrastructure requirements both in support of the network itself as well as network users accessing cloud resources

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This professional position requires the employee to fulfill the requirements of the job. This may entail occasional situations where work outside of standard work days is required to meet deadlines or respond to emergency situations.

Work in an open office environment.

This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations.
