Senior Network and Security Engineer

George Mason University, Information Technology Services (ITS) - located on the Fairfax, Va., campus-invites applications for a Senior Network and Security Engineer position within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services, Network and Security Engineering team. The successful applicant will be a key member of a technical team that designs, implements and maintains the university data network in a fast-paced, multicampus environment.

Responsibilities include:

* Project management and network design;
* Maintenance and troubleshooting;
* Maintaining network documentation pursuant to department and Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology (IT) security guidelines;
* Working with EIS staff, ITS staff, and business units to design virtual networks to meet university business goals (designs should embrace modularity, scalability, and operational simplicity), and recommending reconfiguration as necessary; and
* Developing procedures and documentation to support operations.



Required Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in a computational, scientific, or technical field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
* Working knowledge of the Internet Protocol (IP) suite and Ethernet;
* Working knowledge of interior and exterior gateway routing protocols, specifically OSPF and BGP;
* Working knowledge of networking technologies and concepts including network and server virtualization, VLAN, MPLS, VPN, Wi-Fi, and WDM;
* Experience configuring Ethernet switches, IP routers, and network security appliances-preferably in an enterprise environment;
* Demonstrated work experience in network element or telecommunications system configuration;
* Ability to work cooperatively with external providers, clients, and customers with varying degrees of technical ability in order to complete projects;
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills including some experience with technical documentation for a network engineering audience and
* Must be eligible to work in secure computing environments including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).



Preferred Qualifications:

* Extensive experience configuring Cisco routing and switching devices, and Palo Alto firewalls;
* Working knowledge of a Linux-, BSD- or Unix-based operating system;
* Working knowledge of a Microsoft Windows-based operating system;
* Five or more years' demonstrated work experience in network element or telecommunications system configuration;
* Experience working in a higher education environment; and
* Industry or vendor certifications indicating proficiency in configuration of routing, switching, and firewall devices, such as, CCNA, CCNP, CCIE.



Salary up to $96,000; commensurate with education and experience.
