The University of Southern California's (USC's) Information Technology Services is seeking a talented Senior Internet Engineer with an exceptional commitment to service excellence to join its team. As the Senior Internet Engineer, you will be an integral member of the Los Nettos Network team, collaborating with diverse and talented team members to help solve multidimensional information technology problems, improve customer experience, and generate value for our campus stakeholders across a broad base of departments and constituencies.

Created in 1988 to provide cost-effective connections to the Internet for local campuses and research institutes, today the Los Nettos regional network continues to provide connectivity to Los Angeles area educational and research organizations with its state-of-the-art optical network supporting campuses, researchers, and faculty interested in high-performance data transfers, software-defined networks, and experimentation with next-generation technologies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate for the position of Senior Internet Engineer must meet the following qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
* Five years of experience in one of the following fields: information technology, network engineering, data center networking, or internet peering exchanges.
* CCIE certification or equivalent experience.
* Significant experience with the TCP/IP protocol suite.
* Demonstrated experience with L3 protocols such as BGP, OSPF, VRF.
* Demonstrated experience with L2 protocols such as STP and LACP.
* Proficiency in optical networking including the use of multi-degree DWDM systems.
* Practical experience with copper and fiber-optic cables and transceivers.
* Deep understanding and experience with Linux server management and allied software and applications.
* Demonstrated experience with DNS (BIND), MySQL, Apache, Perl, Python, and C.
* Strong understanding of security best practices including VPN, firewall, and encryption.
* Significant experience with switches, routers, and optical platforms.
* Understanding of peering policies and internet exchange best practices.
* Experience with providing and using colocation services.
* Understanding of data center operations.
* Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills.
* Strong project management skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for the position of Senior Internet Engineer has the following qualifications:

* Master's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
* Eight or more years of experience in one of the following fields: information technology, network engineering, data center networking, or internet peering exchanges.
* Experience with Cisco, Arista, and Ciena switches, routers, and optical platforms.
* Proven experience delivering reliable and quality network service within a higher education and/or service provider environment.

THE WORK YOU WILL DO

The Senior Internet Engineer drives the day-to-day technical operations of the Los Nettos regional network. This role designs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains regional network equipment across multiple platforms. The Senior Internet Engineer ensures that all networking activities are aligned to industry best practices as well as ITS and university policies, processes, and procedures. The Senior Internet Engineer collaborates with multi-organizational network engineers to ensure the delivery of best-in-class network services to Los Angeles area educational and research organizations. As part of ITS, the Senior Internet Engineer demonstrates ITS values in action.

Job Accountabilities

The Senior Internet Engineer:

* Contributes to the administration of the group by providing documentation and materials for the Los Nettos board of directors, the Los Nettos technical committee, and Los Nettos associates. Collaborates effectively with colleagues, peers, and Los Nettos customers and stakeholders. Creates and maintains detailed written documentation. Openly shares experience and subject matter expertise with ITS co-workers and the Los Nettos technical committee.
* Designs new network architecture to meet regional network needs. Develops thorough project plans. Drives project progress. Defines processes and procedures. Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, operations, and disaster recovery.
* Drives the day-to-day operation of the Los Nettos regional network and colocation services to deliver reliable and quality network service to Los Nettos associates and member institutions. Delivers high-quality service in every customer interaction, with a focus on responsiveness and professionalism. Works collaboratively to build strong customer and stakeholder relationships to achieve shared objectives. Provides advanced consulting services to constituents and develops effective solutions to complex problems.
* Manages complex intercampus and interjurisdictional projects for the Los Nettos regional network. Supports the current and future needs of the university and the Los Nettos community. Anticipates challenges and changing business needs. Develops mitigation and remediation plans for risks and issues that may arise.
* Drives the development and maintenance of the technical environment. Supports the day-to-day activities related to DNS, hostmaster, and network operations functions. Provides technical expertise in network monitoring by leveraging the traffic monitoring system and producing performance status reports. Contributes to the information repository. Participates in website development. Provides advanced consultative services to customers. Develops creative solutions for highly complex problems. Creates custom scripts to improve network efficiency and enhances network automation.
* Analyzes network data and statistics to both proactively and reactively resolve network issues and identify root causes. Recommends realistic solutions. Works with industry experts and vendors to find and implement effective applications of technology. Resolves complex vendor-specific problems and submits bug reports to vendors.
* Contributes to an inclusive environment that values differences by building and maintaining collaborative relationships with team members, peers, and ITS leaders. Actively embodies ITS values and behaviors including accountability, ethics, and best-in-class customer service. Contributes to a culture of trust and transparency by sharing information broadly, openly, and deliberately.
* Supports the vision for the Los Nettos Network. Works closely with team members and management to implement and support effective solutions for the network. Maintains currency with technology, standards, and best practices. Supports process improvement efforts within the team and across ITS.
* Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
