Applying Design and Continuous Learning At Scale

As Senior Director of Design at Pivotal, you will build and elevate a team of designers focused on applying their craft to a range of products, services, and experiences. Our culture provides an opportunity to explore the edges of the technologies we're evolving with our customers. Some of our product work applies design thinking to services used by thousands of software teams, who in-turn impact millions of consumers around the globe (including you!). Other work will be speculative and generative explorations that you carry out across the organization to discover, frame, and prioritize solutions that exist in the context of our customers.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will be responsible for the health of our design team and global practice across the Cloud Foundry ecosystem. You will serve as a diplomat and representative for design thinking within Pivotal's Cloud R&D organization, which encompasses hundreds of individuals on 80+ teams working across 8 locations internationally. This role will help define and iterate on new ways of working, operating, and integrating UCD and designers within an XP and Lean Product Development environment at scale. You will be a member of the Pivotal Cloud Foundry senior leadership team where you will directly collaborate with leaders responsible for Product Management, Software Engineering, Program Management and Technical Writing. Your portfolio will show that you've coached designers working on challenging projects across all steps of the design process: UX strategy, research, prototyping, usability and solution validation. In addition you will be expected to:

* Lead design across teams of multidisciplinary practitioners in service of delivering meaningful solutions to complex problems
* Ensure we are onboarding, supporting, growing, and coaching designers
* Build an understanding of our customers' environment in support of driving a customer-centered product strategy
* Foster UX best practices and design principles for complex distributed systems
* Advocate, mentor and educate on the benefits of design thinking to product teams, program areas and new designers alike
* Find a way through fuzzy, complicated, organizational challenges
* Know how to derive insights from data and build those into an actionable plan
* Be accountable for driving cross-team alignment
* Challenge teams to think bigger and act smaller

We're looking for candidates who have:

* Managed an entire product lifecycle from concept to release and iteration
* 8 years of experience designing and delivering experiences in cross-functional teams from concept to delivery
* 3+ years of management experience
* Passion for coaching, mentoring and growing designers of all shapes
* Structured a growing design practice
* Successfully navigated a team or organization through tough transitions.
* Advocated for and taught product design skills across the organization. Found ways to involve non-designers in the product design process through collaborative ideation and other creative means.
* Collaborated across functions to help set roadmaps that will achieve business outcomes through the lens of the customer and user
* Versed in and contribute to design industry core competencies in addition to leadership experience
