Job Description

The Database Reliability Team is a team of database subject-matter experts and Cloud engineers who support the database administration needs of application teams at the New York Times.

Our mission is to increase the efficiency of database operations for application teams and data consumers by building self-service tools that ensure quality and best-practices in database provisioning, resiliency, performance analysis and tuning, monitoring, ETL, database security and governance.

As a member of the Database Reliability Engineering team, you will work with a group of smart and talented database professionals who are passionate about database technology and work daily to ensure the availability and protection of data at the New York Times.

What You'll Do:

* You will develop standard operating procedures and automate them to eliminate toil


* You will build software with the team to audit cloud deployments, monitor databases and data systems


* You will implement data migration pipelines between database engines and systems and coordinate failover with application teams


* You will provide best-practice guidance and build community around database technology implemented at the NYT


* You will troubleshoot database and infrastructure issues across multiple tiers and coordinate remediation efforts


* You will help application teams define, implement and meet service-level objectives for their database operations


* You will identify technical debt and partner with application engineers and project managers to build database remediation goals into team roadmaps


* You will mentor junior database reliability engineers


* You will provide production support on an on-call rotation shared with other database reliability and application engineers



Who We're Looking For:

* 6+ years working with one or more relational databases at scale including MySQL, Oracle or PostgreSQL. Experience with Amazon Aurora a plus.


* 3+ years experience developing software with an engineering team using Python, Golang or Java


* Experience deploying software and databases on cloud infrastructure with Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform.


* Comfortable approaching unfamiliar languages and technologies


* Proficiency with the Linux OS and the command line


* Strong communication skills with the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience
